A Premier Institute for Learning Odissi, Classical and Creative Dance
Odissi dance is one of the eight classical dance forms of India. Its origin is traced to the state of Orissa in eastern India. It is the oldest surviving dance form of India on the basis of archaeological evidences. The classic treatise of Indian dance, Natya Shastra, refers to it as Odra-Magadhi. First century BCE bas-reliefs in the hills of Udaygiri (near Bhubaneswar) testify to its antiquity. It was suppressed under the British Raj, but has been revitalised since India gained independence. It is particularly distinguished from other classical Indian dance forms by the importance it places upon the Tribhangi (literally: three parts break), the independent movement of head, chest and pelvis and upon the basic square stance known as Chauka or Chouka that symbolises Lord Jagannath.

Rabindra Nritya performance by Nrityabasa PreranaOdisha, on the eastern sea coast, is the home of Odissi, one of the many forms of Indian classical dance.
Sensuous and lyrical, Odissi is a dance of love and passion touching on the divine and the human, the sublime and the mundane. The Natya Shastra mentions many regional varieties, such as the south-eastern style known as the Odhra Magadha which can be identified as the earliest precursor of present day Odissi.
Odissi, one of the principal classical dance styles of India; others include bharata natyam, kuchipudi, kathak, kathakali, and manipuri. It is indigenous to Orissa, eastern India, and follows the principles of the Natya-shastra. Its close replication of poses found on classical temple sculptures suggests great antiquity. Related to bharata natyam in its basic pattern, odissi emphasizes sinuous postures and is enlivened by a variety of elevations and jumps. It is predominantly a dance for women.
Dance was perhaps the first forms of expression that did not need words, but was a much better way of communicating the unsaid or the unknown. India, since its initiation has had a rich and prosperous history attached to dance and its various forms, one of which is the Odissi, also spelt as Orissi. It is perhaps the most ancient form of Indian classical dance which till date has a strong and prominent position within a vast array of Indian dances.

Amrita Das, a skilled artiste in the field of Indian Classical Dance is blessed to groom her talents under the tutelage of legendary Guru Kelucharan Mohapatra, Guru Ratikanta Mohapatra and Smt. Sujata Mohapatra at Srjan, Odissi Nrityabasa, Bhubaneswar. Her life’s great passion had come at the age of eleven when she came to Guruji’s house. The crown jewel of her training was the time spent at Srjan. She was intensively trained and groomed by her Gurus for more than 18 years and has become the bearer of Indian Cultural Heritage. Apart from the regular training course, she has also learnt some Odissi items from Guru Muralidhar Maji, Smt. Aloka Kanungo, Smt. Paushali Mukherjee and Smt. Nandini Ghoshal. Amrita enriched her repertoire while she attented the workshop on ‘Contemporary Dance’ under the World Dance Alience, Asia Pacific, and Workshop on Orissa’s Sambalpur Folk Dances conducted by Guru Sudhakar Sau. She has also joined the appreciation course on Dance conducted by West Bengal State Music Academy.

The most memorable performance was in the year 1995 while Amrita was only eleven years old and participated in a Dance drama “Krishna-Sudama” at Cuttack Doordarshan Kendra where Guru Kelucharan Mohapatra played as “Sudama” and Amrita was little “Krishna”.

Nrityabasa Prerana was founded by Amrita in the year 2000 while she was only seventeen years old. After ten years’ successful running this institution has turned into a fully grown organization. Behind setting up this foundation, Amrita’s aim was to produce perfect dancers – not just performers. Towards fulfilment of her desire, Amrita is trying utmost so that her dreams become true.
The students of this institution are given lessons on traditional Odissi items choreographed by Guru Kelu Charan Mohapatra and Guru Muralidhar Maji.
Apart from regular training on Odissi, lessons on creative dancing, Rabindra Nritya and traditional folk-dancing are taught here.
Physical fitness is very essential for every classical dancer. From the very beginning lessons for aquiring physical fitness are given in this institution.
For becoming a complete dancer, apart form dancing, learning of dance related things like make-up, costumes,, hair-styling and stage –craft are also equally important. Training for learning all those dance related items are given here through various workshops.
Nrityabasa prerana is a Government Registered organisation under the West Bengal Societies Regulation Act, 1961.
Arrangements for appearing in examinations of Prachin Kala Kendra, Chandigarh are also made through this premier institution.
Admission is open throughout the year for anyone interested in Odissi and Classical Dance from 2 years of age. Admission forms and Prospectus are available at the centre.

The students and their parents, under the guidance of Guru Amrita Das, celebrate the annual function of Nrityabasa Prerana in the month of November/December every year. They also celebrate "Basanta Utsav" and "Birthday of the School", arrange for a Picnic in the winter season.

Nrityabasa Prerana is a premier dance-troupe of West Bengal. The Troupe has performed in several places in India and Abroad. The performers are specialist in Odissi, Classical, folk and contemporary dance forms.

Shakuntala: this productionis based on the divine love of shakuntala and dushmanta created by the great poet kalidas in his invaluable creation 'avigyan shakuntalam'. The choreographer has characterised the theme of whole incident in a different angel where it is seen that the nature responds with the change of feeling of humanlife.
Nabadurga means the nine appearances of devi durga, the goddess of power. In this production those nine states of durga - sailaputri, bramhacharini, kushmanda, chandraghanta, katyayani, skandomata, kalaratri, mahagouri and siddhidatri have been fully described. The dance-drama ends with the killing of 'asur', the image of evil strength by the hands of durga.
They are cute daughters, they are sweet sisters, they are lovely lovers, they are darling wives, they are adorable mothers, they are Women. Through this piece of dance one message regarding the strength of women, their ability, their devotion to work in every sphere of life are reflected. The existence of women in every stage cannot be ignored.
The universe functions with rhythm. The celestial bodies move with rythmic sequence. The changing pattern of moon, the intensity of the waves in the ocean, the sound ot the flowing water of the stream, the setting of day and night, change of the seasons, the beat o the heart – all have rythmic cycles. Often this rhythm is manifested to the “Padachhanda” of Nataraj. This production is based on Rabindra-Bhavna.
Rabindrik dance-drama – choreography is based on classical odissi dance and folk dances of various states of India.
Dance in human society is rooted in age old tradition. This vast sub-continent has given birth to varied forms of dancing, each shaped by the influences of a particular period and environment. The evolution of dancing art form is the basic issue of this production
Amrita has been appreciated both as a performer and choreographer not only in the field of Indian classical dance but also in the filed of Creative dance. Few of her creations are being appended.
